How to Prepare for your Newborn’s Arrival

Categorized: Baby Bedding, Planning | No comments

Once your baby finally arrives expect things to get more hectic and tiring, especially for the new mom.  Make things as easy as you can beforehand by being prepared.  Ideally, you should be fully prepared at least a month before your expected delivery date, because babies have a habit of not arriving on schedule.

Get the baby’s crib or bassinet ready, with clean and infant-safe bedding ready to be laid on it.  Be sure that the baby will be lying on a firm, flat surface to prevent the incidence of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).  Get more than one set of bedding so you can wash them every few days.  Linens should be pre-washed and ironed before use.  Make sure that the baby’s sleeping area conforms to safety standards.  If you are opting to co-sleep with baby, inspect the family bed for anything that could be a potential source of accidents and mishaps.  The room and any other areas where the baby will be in should be clean, free from dust and have adequate ventilation.

For the first weeks of life, your baby won’t be playing much with toys, so if you are short on time, you can postpone that for later.  Simply hang a mobile above where the baby will be staying most of the time to stimulate him.  Have a changing area where diapers and other grooming essentials can be kept. Organize the baby’s things well so that you know where everything is when you need it. Get plenty of wipes, baby towels, and burping cloths.

For baby’s bathing needs, have enough cotton baby towels on hand.  If the infant tub does not come with any attachments for supporting your baby while bathing, be sure to get one.  Nettings that attach to the rim of the tub are particularly convenient and easy to maintain.

Even if you intend to breastfeed, you should purchase at least a few bottles of formula bottles and a sterilizer.  Have an emergency supply of formula on hand for any contingencies. Buy plenty of diapers—you will be doing a lot of diaper changes.

For baby’s clothing, prepare enough so that have enough even without doing laundry for a few days.  Ensure that the clothing you prepare is easy to put on and take off, with strategic snaps placed for easy access.  Have clothing for hot weather and for cold.
