Ideas for Decorating with Nursery Rugs

Preparing the baby’s room can be one of the most exciting parts of getting ready for a new arrival. In a nursery with a wooden or otherwise bare floor, you’ll want a rug to add warmth and coziness to the room. There are many cute ideas for nursery rugs that can help you brainstorm before decorating your own nursery.

Pastel colors are by far the most popular shades for these rugs. Something about the softness of light blues, purples, yellows, and pinks make them simply more appropriate for babies. To get over the boy or girl dilemma (unless you know) avoid choosing a pink rug or one in blue.

Some people choose to use brighter colors anyway. Anything colorful will add a youthful feel. Although they aren’t common, black and white rugs can be a useful addition to a nursery because the contrasting colors help a growing baby’s vision develop. Whichever color you choose, you should choose a soft color to complement it.

You can also choose from rugs with pictures on them. These can be very interesting for older babies to view. Scenes of the outdoors or of baby animals are common. Other images may be specific to gender; for example, a train scene for boys or fairy scene for girls. Infants won’t be able to clearly see the pictures until they get a little older, but a rug of this sort can add more to a themed nursery than a plain, pink or blue rug would.

Consider choosing an exciting shape for a rug. The first thing that comes to mind for many is a cloud-shaped rug. This is a perfect shape in a room using sky blue or pale yellow as the main colors. Try to match the shape of your rug to the overall theme of the room. Rugs may also be shaped liked moons or stars. These would work well in a nursery using more subdued colors, like purple and blue. Silver accents would be a great touch.

Choosing a rug for your baby’s nursery is fun, but make sure the rug you select is functional as well. It should be soft but durable. In a baby or child’s room, things will get messy quickly, so choose a rug that’s easy to wash as well. Keep these things in mind and you should have no problem finding lovely nursery rugs to suit your needs.
